In lieu of flowers, donations to the ISLAND PROSTATE CENTRE would be appreciated
Summer started off with a bang as our July App’n Yap coincided with Bastille Day at Alex and Marie France home in Oak Bay. It was very well attended. The evening weather was perfect, the gardens were immaculate, the food was great and we were able to help Stu celebrate his birthday. On the heals of that event we had our summer BBQ at Wanda and Colm’s. Another great success with close to 60 guests enjoying the gourmet burgers, deserts, Bocci and horseshoes. You can imagine the amount of work that went into both these events and thank you again to the hosts and those who helped out. With the passing of Barry this year I was very thankful that Wanda and Colm volunteered their new home. It was such a great event that Colm and Wanda have agreed to host next summer’s soire which I think will be even better if that’s possible.
As the days of summer got shorter it feels like everyone took time for family. I am constantly reminded how fleeting a lifespan is as we participated in Barry’s celebration life – I hadn’t realized that he had spent some time in the Navy. That evening I had word that Len Cox had quietly passed away after his battle with cancer. Not a week later more sad news to hear that James Nelson had also passed on. Our thoughts are with Barry’s family, Len’s wife Greta, and Ken’s wife Susan. I assured them that we are here for them and not to forget about us here in the club.
For our first meeting on September 4th we will have the privilege to meet Colin Henthorne, Master and Captain of the Queen of the North when she sunk 12 years ago. This should be a great evening and I encourage you to invite a guest. Cost for guests is $31.50 – please inform Jay ahead of time how you will be paying for your guest. If there are any special guests coming please let me know as well.
September 18 is the Golf Tournament. It’s a mixed event including 9 holes of golf followed by dinner. I think a few volunteers are need to help Ron make this happen. The Fall Ball is being organized by Rick McKay this year and I know that he needs some help. If can help please let me know.
Some very sad news. James Nelson passed away after battling cancer for some time.
Club President Marc Dumais has arranged for the delivery of flowers to Susan Tate and has expressed condolences on behalf of Camosun Gyro Club.
Susan has indicated that no arrangements have been made at this point but she will let us know when plans are made.
I regret to inform Club members that our good friend and fellow Gyro, Leonard Cox , has passed away after a battle with cancer. Len and and I were brought into Camosun in 2008 and I will miss him.
We understand that Greta is on the Mainland with family.
As we receive further information regarding Len’s passing , we will keep you posted.
